From experience, fish hatchery people know that coho eggs will hatch as alevins at 420-500 ATUs and become fry at 700-750 ATUs. [For an explanation of ATUs see the Glossary Page]

The water temperature in the heath trays has been averaging about 5°. The 3800 eggs from Stoney Creek broodstock which were taken on November 30th are at 470 ATUs and are almost all hatched (photo on the left). When their yolk sac is used up, they are called "pondable fry" and will be moved to the Cap troughs so they can be fed daily. This will take place around March 21st.

As of February 1st, the 16,000 eggs from the Chilliwack hatchery broodstock (featured below) which were taken on December 17th are now being kept at 7° and have reached 306 ATUs. They are expected to hatch around February 18th, or so.

Egg shocking is a process that separates dead and infertile salmon eggs from viable ones. It is performed when the eggs have reached the eyed stage (when the embryos' eyes become visible as dark spots). [This procedure can be scheduled—see the notes at the end of this update]

Shocking the eggs means subjecting them to mechanical agitation, such as dropping them into water or rolling them gently. The agitation causes the membranes of non-viable eggs to rupture. They become opaque or milky white, making them easy to distinguish from healthy ones which remain intact.

The eggs were dropped from a height of about 30 cm into a tub of incubator water. Shocking them like this stimulated the successful eggs while helping to identify those that had failed to develop.

The shocked eggs were put back in their tray and placed in the incubator once again. They will hatch as alevins in a few weeks.

Lastly, Paul took the opportunity to pick out non-viable eggs. Four trays of eggs were processed in about half an hour.

ARPSES provides opportunities for the local schools and the community to participate in the fertilization and raising of juvenile coho salmon. Through our "Egg Takes" event in December and the promotion of the "Salmonids in the Classroom" program throughout the year, students are able to learn more about environmental stewardship. Elementary school students in Abbotsford, B.C., participate in the fertilization of approximately 30,000 — 60,000 coho eggs each year.

"Water clarity good. Lots of full colour coho. Counted at least 20+. Stood next to fish surging upstream like they only had one thing on their mind.
"Stood next to one fish that had to be 8 lbs. Did not see any Chum. This stretch had no recorded fish last year. This year they are back! No dam stopping them."
